It is with heavy hearts and deep love that we share the peaceful passing of our beloved grandma, mom, sister, aunt, and friend, Michelle Bernadette Luene Herrington-Kocourek, at the age of 66. Michelle completed her earthly journey on the birthday of her beloved late grandson, Zachary, on July 3, 2026. She spent her final days surrounded by family and loved ones in the NRGH Palliative Care Unit, where she received incredible care from the medical team.
Born in Calgary but raised on Vancouver Island, Michelle carried the island’s warmth and resilience with her wherever she went. For many years, she called the Cowichan Valley and Nanaimo home, where she found immense joy in her work serving the children and families at the Nanaimo Child Development Centre. Michelle touched many lives and will be remembered by so many as a fiercely loyal friend.
Michelle was a devoted and loving mother to Amy, Jen (Sterling), Lisa (Nick), Heather and Shaun (Cara). She found her greatest joy in being “Grandma” to her beloved Zachary (predeceased), Qoi, Joshua (Josh), Katelyn (Katie), Lucas, Charlotte, Oliver, Violet, and Emmalyn (Emmy). Her children and grandchildren meant the world to her.
She is lovingly remembered by her siblings Miriam, Duane, Lani and Karen, and is predeceased by her brother Blaine, and her parents Miriam Klein and James Vensel, as well as step-mother Jacqueline (Jackie) McCandless.
Michelle was known for her radiant smile, kind heart, and calming presence. Whether it was through her warm hugs, her strength in times of trial, or her ability to make anyone laugh, she had a way of making everyone feel seen and loved. She carried grace, grit, and humour to the very end, and was a quiet warrior throughout her illness - always thinking of others and leaving behind a legacy of compassion, oh and a plethora of craft supplies! Despite her declining health in her final week, she was concerned about fundraising for pillows for the hospital. That was Michelle!
All who loved Michelle are welcome to join in honouring her life and sharing stories that keep her spirit alive at a Celebration of Life held September 12, 2026, at 10:30 am at the Nanaimo Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building at 2424 Glen Eagle Crescent.
Her family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to her incredible care team, particularly at the NRGH Emergency Department and Palliative Care Unit, who supported Michelle with such dignity and compassion. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nanaimo Child Development Centre in Michelle’s honour.
Though our hearts ache, we are comforted knowing that Michelle’s light will continue to shine through all the lives she touched. Because we knew her, we have been changed for good.
